One of Sweden’s most popular rappers has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Yasin Abdullahi, who goes by the name Yasin Byn, was among seven people detained by police following the discovery of a man’s body in a car in Stockholm on December 30 with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The 20-year-old victim, who is reported to have been a former friend of Abdullahi’s, was wearing a bullet-proof vest when he was found alive by police, before being taken to hospital where he died of his wounds.
Abdullahi has over 640,000 monthly listeners on Spotify with his ten most popular songs have been played 52 million times on music streaming service and currently tops chats on the platform with his hit song “XO”.
According to Swedish media, masked individuals were seen running from the scene on the night that the 20-year-old man was murdered. Three men were arrested in a car at Södermalm in Stockholm and two other people were arrested nearby.
In total, seven suspects were arrested in connection with the killing. Four have now been released, while the other three, including Abdullahi remain in detention on suspicion of murder.
The 21-year-old rapper from Rinkby in northwest Stockholm is alleged to be a core member of the Shottaz organised crime gang, the same gang the victim is alleged to have belonged to.
The group is embroiled in a bloody gang war against rival Dödspatrullen (Death Patrol) which operates in the same area. Several of Yasin’s friends have been murdered in the conflict.
The artist has previously been convicted of serious weapons crimes and had only been released from prison on probation in November.
The rise in gang-related crime in Sweden led to neighbouring Denmark re-installing border patrols between the two countries in November following a series of shootings and explosions around the Danish capital, according to the Danish authorities, were committed by Swedes.
